When angels walk among us

Sometimes I feel I am carried on angel’s wings. But my angels come in the form of people. Special people who touch my life through all its ups and downs. The other night our bus driver arrived at the door with the most enormous bouquet of beautiful flowers. The palest of orange gerberas mixed with vivid yellow lilies. Flowers that fill my heart with joy. ‘Yellow for the breast’ he said. And he has been there all along. Our beautiful bus driver who cares for my children daily on their ride to school. It’s so funny that he drives the breast cancer bus. And when I didn’t think I’d make it through the whole ordeal, he lovingly encouraged me. Always smiling. Always encouraging. I don’t think he knows how special he is. He even took the kids for a longer bus ride on my chemo days so I could spend an extra hour resting. That is love in its purest form.

And then on Wednesday, I returned home from surgery to the most enormous box of Koko Black chocolates. And everyone knows how special they are, don’t they. The most incredible thing is they are a gift from a lady who I am yet to meet. One of the ladies my husband cares for. And the generosity and love in her gesture is beyond words. My friend Peter often asks ‘Are we strangers here? Or are we friends yet to meet’. I love that. And I am touched so deeply by the love that flows my way.

Because there have been so many angels in my life. Special friends, family, many of my doctors and nurses, and people I meet for perhaps only a brief moment in time. And although their wings are not obvious, they have carried me through. Loving thoughts, loving words, loving deeds.

And though there were times I felt completely alone, I now realise we are never on our own…

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.” The Lord replied “My precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints in the sand, it was then that I carried you.”
